Hi Dustin,

The Bible does speak of a 'Lake of Fire' in the book of (Revelation 20:15). The book of Revelation though is a symbolic book (as we are told in Revelation 1:1) and so this is not literal.

Yes in Matthew 10:28 it does say: “fear not them (the wolves amongst whom the believers were to be sent see verse 16) which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him (God) which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Here then we have two ideas which are linked. The body and the soul. The wolves could kill the body but not the soul. God can destroy both the body and the soul in "hell".

SOUL: The word "soul" in the original could just have easily been translated "life". It is the Greek word "psychē" and this same word is translated "life" in verse 39. If the translators were consistent then we would not get this idea of a 'soul' burning in hell.

HELL: The word "Hell" has been translated from the original Greek word "Gehenna" which was a rubbish dump just outside the walls of Jerusalem in the days of Christ. It was a real place then existent. This was a place of destruction like the grave will be. It is not speaking of a place under the earth where the Devil will punish your immortal soul for eternity.

Piece all this together the verse is simply saying "Fear not those in the world who can kill your body - but rather fear God who can destroy your whole life and your body when you die in a place of destruction".

As a side note this verse therefore proves the soul is destructible and not immortal.

And maybe you didn't mean that the body and soul are one in the same but simply that the soul isn't immortal, but that still doesn't answer my question about the existence of hell.

Does the Bible not also talk of a lake of fire that all liars shall have their place in? Does it not also say to "fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Does this not signify a difference between the body and the soul?
